Congratulations to Karel Kubeška, Jiří Candra, Martin Jurík and Lukáš Klíma, winners of the 2016 Edinburgh International Championship. This was a commanding performance where they just got better and better as the competition progressed through the latter rounds of the round-robin and knock-out stages of the competition. In the final, having withstood some real first end pressure from Bruce Mouat, Bobby Lammie, Alasdair Schreiber and Derrick Sloan to get away with losing a single shot against the head, they came roaring back in the very next end with a big four that seemed to come out of nowhere. From then on it was an uphill struggle for the home team, especially when, in an end that they looked to have under control – the fourth, a missed guard from Bobby, hitherto a towering presence in the team, then a short attempt at a draw from Bruce left the door open for Jiří Candra to make the simplest of draws for a big three and a commanding 7-2 lead going into the second half of the game.
In truth, there was no way back for team Mouat who having conceded another single in the fifth end, conceded the game.
So, Karel and company become only the fourth overseas team to win the famous old World’s Trophy, following in the illustrious footsteps of Eigil Ramsfjell, Ulrik Schmidt, Andy Kapp and Aku Kauste.
